Current Projects

  • Ocotillo: A many fiber optical spectrograph for the APO 3.5m

The Ocotillo spectrograph is currently in development to support both larger scale integral field single object spectroscopy and multi-fiber multi-object spectroscopy through the use of fiber robots. Ocotillo uses a swappable fiber front end (either a fully filled IFU or a collection of robot positioners) to feed a spectrograph below the observing floor.

  • The image is black. In the upper center left there is a white circle of light. Several green circles encircle different radii.

    SDSS-V: Focal Plane System

SDSS-V FPS North is currently commissioning at Apache Point Observatory. Our group has been involved with characterization of the focal plane, development of the focal plane robot controls, and the fiber system.

  • Maratus: A UV Cubesat to map the CGM

Maratus is a currently proposed 6U subesat to map the circumgalatic medium (CGM) in the ultraviolet. This is a broad reaching collaboration, including both my group and other groups at UW, the A&A department in the college of engineering, UCB, UC Boulder, NASA Goddard, and JPL.

  • Three black squares. From left to right, a sub-rectangle is silvered with a slit in the middle. The furthest left block has silver at the bottom, then the middle, then the top.

    KOSMOS silicon slits

We’re storing information here about our approach and techniques for etching KOSMOS slits at the Washington Nanofabrication Facility. You can find the manuals here.
